At PLAYBOOK we spend a lot of time thinking about how to speed up Lean product development projects. In fact, that’s mostly what we do. We take this work into the field, test it, then build what works into our software.  So what really causes project delays? We are creating a series of posts on the topic. Here are the first two. You’ll be surprised at some of our findings. In many cases, we were too!

Team availability

Our first post covers how truly available project team members are to do real project work, and the subsequent impact true availability has on project delivery. 

We’ve found that often critical resources are loaded with work that they just don’t have enough time in the day to complete.  When critical tasks fall behind, the entire project timeline gets pushed out.  Often this happens at a rapid rate. You'll be shocked when you see the graph.

Team priorities

Our next post covers the topic of priority tasks. The concept is that projects become late one day at a time. If one person on the team isn’t clear about what they need to be working on today to move the project forward, this could have a negative impact on meeting project deadlines and ultimately your launch date.

The effect of working on the wrong work is cumulative. One day, plus another, plus another…and quickly projects become months and months behind.
